The Kenora & District Chamber of Commerce and the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Ontario and Federal governments, have launched the Covid-19 Rapid Screening Initiative. Through this initiative, the KDCC will roll out free rapid tests for small and medium sized businesses in the Kenora district.
The goal of this program is to identify asymptomatic cases of COVID-19 in the workplace that may otherwise be missed, helping to curb the spread in the workplace, at home, and around the community.
Public health and the health or our economy is interdependent. That is why the Kenora Chamber is onboard to distribute rapid testing kits to small and medium sized businesses in our area. We hope that through this initiative, we will be able to curb the spread and reopen our local economy safely.
Why do this? The latest information from Health Canada suggests that up to 1/3 of people carrying the virus are asymptomatic (i.e. not showing any symptoms of illness)! Over 50% of known cases were transmitted by an asymptomatic carrier. This makes it incredibly important to find asymptomatic carriers in order to combat the spread.
A COVID-19 screening test can be performed anywhere (i.e. at your workplace!) and does not require shipping a specimen to a lab for processing. It takes approximately 15 minutes to see the results. Frequent testing (twice a week) increases the chances of early identification of cases.
The COVID-19 Rapid Screening Initiative will provide free rapid antigen testing kits for employees of small and medium sized businesses. Businesses (including non-chamber members) with 150 or less are welcome to participate in this program.
DISCLAIMER: These kits are NOT for anyone showing symptoms related to COVID-19. Employees exhibiting symptoms MUST immediately leave the workplace and arrange a PCR test with the Northwestern Health Unit (NWHU) within 24 hours if they are exhibiting symptoms. Screening kits are an added measure but all other PPE and distancing protocols must continue to be followed regardless of screening.
- Each company must assign a Screening Supervisor Designate(s), who will be the contact person for the KDCC and NWHU.
